About Imagery Induction Cape Town

Inger Jansen story

Imagery Induction is the contemporary art practice of Inger Jansen, a part-time artist based in Cape Town

Her work is contemporary figurative mixed media, created though an intuitive and process led approach. The imagery emerges gradually through layers of mark making texture and theme repetition; unfolding gradually instead of being confined to a pre-determined outcome.

Figures are not portraits of specific individuals but of symbolic presence that draws on archetypal forms. The images intend to imprint a sense of confrontation and intimacy at the same time.

Spiritual motifs, markings and halos recur throughout the work, suggesting themes of protection, ritual and power.

Viewers sometimes describe the figures as “alien”; this sense of otherness is intentional, allowing the work to exist beyond specific time, place or identity.

Works are primarily large scale, allowing the imagery to hold physical and emotional impact. The use of mixed media creates surfaces that feel lived in, reinforcing the sense that the figures have been uncovered rather than constructed.

Although the work may feel unsettling to some viewers, it is not intended to provoke fear. Instead, it aims to create space for power, reflection and complexity to co-exist, and for the beauty within, to be seen. Imagery Induction invites viewers to sit with ambiguity and to engage with what is felt rather than what is immediately understood.

Ultimately the work explores the threshold between the conscious and the subconscious, the personal and the universal, and other realms.

The visual language resists clear definition and it is left for the beholder to interpret as they sense.
